Tell your presentation stories better.
AUTHOR: Lolly
You need to write your presentation story about solving it.
You may be your story, but your story has to seem like it’s about your audience. So you are your audience? I dunno. But what I do know is people don’t buy things, they buy solutions to problems. Find the problem, tell a story about how you can solve it. Done. Sold. Success.
First, you need to stop thinking about what you want. It’s making you look desperate. Start thinking about their world. Put yourself in their shoes. Even if they have sweaty feet. What’s keeping them up at night? What’s holding them back from success? Is it their sweaty feet? Maybe. Maybe it’s their lack of time. Their stifled progress. The fact that no one is listening to their ideas.
The easiest way to find out is to ask. Have conversations with your target market. Run workshops where they get something out of it too. Pay for market research. The closer you can get to the customer, the better.
If you can’t empathise with the struggle your customers are experiencing, you won’t be able to speak to them convincingly. But that’s just step one.
When you speak to your customers’ pain, you make them feel understood. You help them see that you’ve been there. That you know what it feels like to struggle, and that you have the solution they need. Make them feel heard, make them trust you, make them ready to move forward.
But they need to know which direction to go in. They need a map. A path. A clear action plan for transformation.
This is the bulk of your story. Showing them how your offering will solve their challenge—and even bring in additional benefits they didn’t know they needed—then showing them how easy it will be to reach their brighter future.
Who could deny that?
Without pain, without struggle, there is no growth. And there’s certainly no need for you. What do you get the person who has everything? Fucked if I know. Luckily for you, that person doesn’t exist. Everyone wants something. You just need to show them you have it.
Reading is tough. Rest your weary eyes on this moving picture instead.
Warning: Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second off your life. Don't you have other things to do? Saying what you’re supposed to say? Presenting how every boring business person presents? If you don’t claim your story you will become a statistic. You have been warned.
